Drawing project: Starrry Night

This lesson was about drawing. But it could also be for painting, or any other medium really. I used a grid for this project. I first chose an artist and then a picture that I wanted to have my students (the others in my class) paint. This lesson can be used in grades 5th-7th. I then divided up the picture into even squares (8, one for each student and one for me) and the students then began to draw what square I handed to them. I gave them a piece of paper that was bigger than the original so the students understand how to enlarge a picture. After they finished drawing, because it was a small group, I allowed them to stretch their legs and walk around to find the other pieces that connected to theirs. Once they made sure their lines lined up, they could begin to paint. I only gave them the 3 primary colors plus black and white, having them mix the other colors that they needed; this refreshed what colors made another color. After they were done, we hung them up and came up with the masterpiece above! They don't quite fit together which is ok. It goes to show that not all art has to be perfect! :) You can use different mediums for this; for younger students you could use crayons or colored pencil. Another fun way would be to try collage, I think that would look really cool.
